Slim Jim
Date: September 4
Time: 1:05 PM
Location: 6.2 mi. w. of Ashland, Clay Co., AL
Site: On a wooded hillside
Weather: Skies clear, wind 10 mph NNW
Temperature: 80 F
Notes: While hiking down a wooded hillside, something in the leaves of a branch over-hanging the trail caught our eyes. While resting motionless on the underside of a leaf, a Walking Stick was hard to see because it looked just like part of the tree. These stick insects are amazing examples of natural camouflage in the form of twigs, leaves, or tree bark. While the largest US species can reach a length of 7 inches, a Malaysian species reaches nearly 2 feet! One more foot and it would be a yard stick!
