In the Strike Zone!
Timber Rattlers are large pit vipers that can grow to over five feet in length. They live on wooded slopes in the eastern states, especially wherever there are rock outcroppings. In the south they are also known as Canebrake Rattlers because they can be found in cane thickets. Some folks call them Velvet Tail Rattlers because of their nearly black, lusterless tail color. Specimens have been observed that are mostly golden, black, greenish, or even light lavender. Some even have a rusty dorsal stripe. These serpents eat small mammals like mice, rats, gophers, and squirrels. Many populations are in serious decline, so they should be left undisturbed.
