Field Notes

Sometimes being stuck is good

Crevice Spiny Lizard
Sceloporus poinsettii

Date: Jul 29
Time: 10:17 AM
Location: 9.8 miles south of Ft. Davis, Jeff Davis County, TX
Site: In a rock crevice on a roadside cut in a bolder strewn hill.
Weather: Skies overcast with the wind from the SSE at 13 mph
Temperature: 81 F
Notes: Apparently this blue-throated fellow saw us coming and scurried to hide in the safety of a crack in the rocks. Unable to get entirely in the shallow recess, enough of his body was exposed for him to be carefully removed from his retreat without harming him. Any further inside the crevice and he would have been able to inflate his body and wedge himself in so that he would have been impossible to dislodge.
