Couch's Spadefoot Toad
Scaphiopus couchii

Spadefoot toads differ from other toads in a couple of ways. One of which is the spade shaped pads they have on the bottoms of their rear feet - hence the name Spadefoot. Another difference is their vertically elliptical pupils. Other toads have horizontally elliptical pupils. There are eight varieties of Spadefoots that range across the southern states and the central plains into Canada. Couch's is one of the more colorful Spadefoots being yellow to green with a a darker irregular pattern on their backs.
